Texas Prairies and Lakes

The Prairies and Lakes region is located in north and central Texas. This region lies between the plains of the West Texas Panhandle and the Pineywoods of East Texas. This grassland prairie is interspersed with patches of woodland that run north and south. The terrain ranges from gently rolling to hilly. Because these patches of treed areas cross strips of prairie grassland, this region is sometimes referred to as the “cross timbers.”

Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll have no problem finding it here. This sprawling region is home to grand urban areas as well as small towns with more character per capita than might seem possible. There’s plenty of room to roam about, and a number of lakes perfect for all kinds of natural experiences — cutting loose with friends or simply cooling off after basking in the steady Texas sunshine.

This region contains Prairies, as the name implies. If you visit Fort Worth, you can see some classic Texas Prairie at either the Fort Worth Nature Preserve or Tandy Hills Nature Preserve, with Tandy Hills likely providing the best view of what a Texas Prairie looked like before civilization arrived.
